Guest list

Also called GL, guest spots

The guest list is the number of free entries the artist gets for a show, plus the names on them, sent to the promoter by an agreed deadline.

The number of spots is agreed in the advance: for a DJ at a club show usually two to four, more for headliners in large clubs. The names come later, usually a day or two before the show, because that’s when the artist knows who is coming.

Example

A 600-capacity club gives [Artist A] four spots. The artist sends one name with a +1 and two single names. That’s four entries, because a +1 uses a spot. The names go in by Friday 18:00 for the Saturday show, and the advance notes that the door honours the list until 01:00.

What to watch for

  • Names as on the guest’s ID, so “Max + 3” has to become four names.
  • A guest list spot gets someone through the door. Access to the booth or the artist area is a separate question, often with a separate wristband.
  • On sold-out nights promoters cap the list. Ask early if the artist needs more spots than usual, and expect a no.
  • Ask until when the list is valid. Guests who arrive after the cutoff pay or wait.
  • Guest names are personal data. Send them only to the people running the door, and don’t keep them longer than needed.
